Maine ( / ˈ m eɪ n /) (French: l’État du Maine) is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast, New Hampshire to the southwest, and the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the northwest and New Brunswick to the northeast. Maine is the northernmost portion of New England and is the country's easternmost state. It is known for its scenery—its jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, and its heavily forested interior—as well as for its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams. The original inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine were Algonquian-speaking peoples. The first European settlement in Maine was in 1604 by a French party. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples wiped out many of them over the years. As Maine entered the 18th century, only a half dozen European settlements still survived. Patriot and British forces contended for Maine's territory during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Maine was an exclave of Massachusetts until 1820, when as a result of the growing population and a political agreement regarding slavery, it became the 23rd state on March 15 under the Missouri Compromise. Maine is the only U.S. state to have a name that is one syllable long, and, in bordering New Hampshire, is the only state which borders exactly one other state. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What are the Maine laws regarding snow removal from sidewalks? Q. My grandmother (who is 80 years old) lives in public housing in South Portland. They have laundry facilities in a separtate building. She must walk at a slightly down hill angle down to the laundry building to do her wash. The sidewalks are not plowed and they have told her that they aren't going to do it this year, so she must walk in roadway. The roadway is plowed but it isn't that great. Does anyone have any information on what the law requires in Maine pertaining to snow removal? Asked by Samantha K - Wed Dec 12 19:34:12 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. In most places that have snow, the property owner is required to keep sidewalks clear of snow that are on or abut their property. This is true in every place I have lived in Minnesota. Answered by msi_cord - Wed Dec 12 19:38:55 2007 Do you know of volunteer spots in Maine in the summer for teenagers? Q. My cousin lives in southern or central Maine and he lives in a small town (low population rate) but wants to do volunteer work. He is 15 years old. Many volunteer places have actually turned him down because he is a teenager with little experience (in building, buisness, etc.) and it's actually hard to find places. So thanks. Answered by pinkreb004 - Mon Jan 21 18:43:53 2008 How can you keep a worm farm in the winter in Maine?
Q. I live in Maine and am taking a master gardeners class. They are going to give us worms to keep through the winter and then sell at a fair in the Spring. I have a very small house with no basement or garage, how can I do this? Asked by irongrama - Sun Oct 15 10:15:00 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Up in northern Maine the class isn't offered at all, I'm jealous! They are probably Eisenia Foetida, they are composting redworms. They are fairly easy to take care of - just feed them leftovers (no meat scraps, dairy, or animal waste though). Look at plans for building a worm bin, it's basically a plastic tote with a cover that has air holes drilled. You can keep the tote inside and out of the way, maybe set something on it that would normally rest on the floor. It won't smell like old garbage and having it that close will make it convenient to feed it scraps.
